Question
I would like to ask Roy Bhaskar whether he sees the moments of critical realism as necessary or contingent, in the sense that they are compatible with other possibilities.
Roy
I would say both. Certainly I think each moment presupposes the next; and I would say that the alethic truth at any one level is the moment that succeeds it, so there is a definite logical order, at least in the way I have tried to develop and present it. However there are also always going to be many possible lines of development. It is a necessary truth that if there is one way to resolve a problem there is in principle and infinite number of ways to resolve that problem. And people in this room have been developing critical realism simultaneously and alongside me in all sorts of different ways. For instance Alan Norrie and Nick Hostettler have been pursuing the dialectical path, while people such as Andrew Collier and Margaret Archer have been working on questions of ultimata and god. But I do believe that all these steps are dialectically related, that is my own belief, one can have sequential development and simultaneous spread. If you want to use one aspect of my work or of critical realism generally that is absolutely fine and if you want to reject a particular thesis or think that a line of research is not fruitful that is fine too. Anything else would be totally inconsistent with my belief in concretely singularised, uniquely individual freedom. Moreover no one's beliefs system should be static, and my view at any one moment of time will not be the same as another; nor in one context as in a different one. All this is consistent, organically, dialectically consistent with transcendental dialectical critical realism.
